Quick answer

This tool turns a PDF into a Microsoft Word .docx file that you can edit. It reads the PDF's text layer, rebuilds paragraphs, headings, tables and images, and keeps page layout close to the original. Scanned PDFs (photos of pages) are converted as images because they contain no text layer.

Key facts

How to download a Pinterest video

2
Wait a few seconds while the document is converted (a 50-page text PDF takes 10–40 seconds).

How the PDF to Word conversion works

A PDF stores every letter with fixed coordinates on the page, not as flowing text. To make it editable again, the converter analyses the position of each character, groups them into lines and paragraphs, detects table borders and image blocks, and writes an equivalent .docx structure. Headings keep their size, bold and italic runs are preserved, tables become real Word tables, and images are embedded at their original resolution.

The engine used here is pdf2docx (built on PyMuPDF), an open-source library that reconstructs layout rather than dumping plain text. That is why multi-column pages, numbered lists and tables come out much closer to the original than with a copy-and-paste approach.

When the result will not be perfect

Some PDFs are hard for any converter, including paid ones: documents with text placed on top of complex graphics, forms with hundreds of small fields, mathematical formulas typed as vector shapes, and files exported from design software where every word is a separate object. In these cases the text will be there, but you may need to fix spacing or merge a few text boxes in Word.

Fonts are a separate case: if the PDF uses a font that is not installed on your computer, Word substitutes the closest available one. The text stays editable; only the look changes slightly.

Scanned PDFs and photos of documents

If your PDF was made by a scanner or a phone camera, it contains images of pages and no text at all. The converter detects this and warns you: «This PDF looks scanned — the text cannot be recognised». You will still get a .docx with the page images placed one per page, which is handy for adding comments or a cover page, but the words inside the pictures are not selectable. To get editable text from a scan you need an OCR tool; this converter does not perform OCR.

Privacy and file handling

Files are uploaded over HTTPS, converted on our own server and stored only under a random 24-character ID that nobody can guess. Both the PDF and the resulting .docx are deleted automatically 30 minutes after conversion, or earlier when you refresh the page. We do not read, index or share the content of your documents and we do not require an e-mail address.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF to Word converter really free?

Yes. There is no trial, no watermark on the output and no account. The only limits are 20 MB, 50 pages per file and 10 conversions per hour.

Will the formatting be preserved?

For PDFs made from Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or InDesign — yes: paragraphs, headings, lists, tables and images are rebuilt. Very complex layouts may need small manual fixes.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to editable text?

No. A scanned PDF has no text layer, so the output contains page images. You need OCR software for recognised text; we tell you honestly when a file looks scanned.

What Word versions open the .docx?

Word 2007 and newer, Word for Mac, Word Online, Google Docs, Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer and any app that reads Office Open XML.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome, tap «Choose PDF», pick the file from Files or Drive, then save the .docx to your phone or open it in Word / Google Docs.

Are my files safe?

The file travels over HTTPS, is processed on our server and deleted after 30 minutes. It is never shared and cannot be found without the random download link.

Why is my file rejected?

Either it is larger than 20 MB, has more than 50 pages, is password-protected, or is not actually a PDF. Split large files or remove the password first.

Can I convert Word back to PDF here?

Not yet — this page is PDF → DOCX only. Word, Google Docs and Pages can export to PDF for free.
